Adventures In Fable - Chapter 5: Love Potion #9
The WizardChapter 5: Love Potion #9
The journey ahead grew darker still, the landscape shifting into a twilight haze where the air felt heavy with mystery. The group pressed on cautiously until the faint glimmer of lantern light flickered in the distance. Drawn toward it, they soon found themselves at the edge of an ornate caravan draped in silks of crimson and violet.
Seated on a plush cushion before the caravan was a woman adorned in flowing garments of gold and black. Bracelets jingled on her wrists as she shuffled a deck of cards, and her piercing emerald eyes glimmered with intrigue. A sign above her read: Madame Seraphina, Purveyor of Secrets.
“Ah, travelers,” the woman purred, her voice smooth as velvet. “You’ve wandered far to find yourselves here. Tell me, are you seeking love, fortune, or simply the courage to continue?”
The Vixen narrowed her eyes. “Who are you?”
Madame Seraphina smiled, her painted lips curling in delight. “A humble guide, my dear. Some call me a gypsy; others, a mystic. But you may call me a friend. And what kind of friend would I be if I didn’t offer you a gift?”
From beneath her cushion, she produced a delicate vial filled with a shimmering pink liquid. The scent of roses and sweet berries wafted into the air.
“This is Love Potion #9,” she said, holding it up to the lantern light. “One drop, and even the coldest heart will burn with passion. Perhaps it’s exactly what you need to survive the Land of Lost Hearts.”
Cupid stepped forward, his wings casting a shadow over the caravan. “No potion can replace true love, Seraphina. What are you trying to achieve here?”
Seraphina chuckled, tapping her nails against the vial. “Not every heart is pure, my winged friend. Some of us need a little... assistance. But the choice is theirs.”
The Hero frowned, his hand hovering over his sword. “And what’s the price?”
Her smile widened. “A secret, of course. Tell me one of your greatest truths, and the potion is yours. But beware—truths have a way of revealing more than you intend.”
The group exchanged uneasy glances. The Vixen seemed tempted, her fingers brushing the vial’s glass surface.
“Enough,” Cupid said firmly. “We’ll go no further with your tricks.”
Seraphina’s eyes darkened, but her smile never faltered. “Very well, brave ones. The potion remains, should you change your mind. But remember—every heart carries its own burdens. Choose wisely.”
The caravan vanished into the haze as suddenly as it had appeared, leaving the group to continue their journey. The scent of roses lingered in the air, a haunting reminder of the temptation they had narrowly escaped. As they moved forward, the faint glow of the horizon promised more challenges ahead.
