The Warlock Beard Oil bottle, the daily step in a simple beard care routine

Beard Care Routine: A Simple Daily and Weekly Plan

The Warlock

Midnight. The candles are low and the stone table is cold. I lay the tools out the way I always do: wash on the left, oil in the middle, balm on the right, comb at the end of the row. Nothing on that table is rare or secret. The power is in the order, and in doing it again tomorrow.

So here's the plain answer. A good beard care routine runs on four clocks. Every day, spend 2 to 5 minutes: rinse with warm water, work in beard oil, comb. Two or three times a week, wash with a real beard wash and condition. Once a week, clean up your neckline and strays. Once a month, trim properly and take stock. That's it. Most beards never need more than that, and most men who struggle are doing too much of one step and none of another.

Here's What You Need to Know
  • Daily, 2 to 5 minutes: rinse with warm water, work beard oil into the skin, comb it through.
  • Two or three times a week: wash with a beard wash instead of daily shampoo, then condition.
  • Weekly: clean up the neckline and strays, and add balm once the beard is long enough to wander.
  • Monthly: a proper trim, a look at your skin, and a sniff test on any old bottles.
  • Length, season and skin change the doses, not the order. Short beards need less. Winter and sensitive skin need gentler.

The beard care routine at a glance

Pin this somewhere you'll see it.

How often Time What you do Why
Daily 2 to 5 min Warm rinse, towel dry, beard oil, comb. Balm if the beard is long. Softer hair, skin that doesn't feel tight or flaky
2 to 3 times a week 5 to 10 min in the shower Beard wash, rinse, conditioner, rinse Clears sweat, food, old product and dead skin
Weekly About 10 min Neckline, cheek line, mustache over the lip, stray hairs, clean your comb Keeps the shape from drifting
Monthly 20 to 30 min Full trim or a barber visit, check your skin, toss anything stale Resets the shape and catches problems early

This is the whole week. For just the shower part, see the beard shampoo and conditioner routine. And if you want the why behind each product on the table, our older piece on the elements of a beard care routine covers them one by one.

The daily ritual: 2 to 5 minutes

Rule one of power: small, every day, beats big, once in a while. Here are the daily beard care steps in order.

  1. Water first. Rinse your beard with warm water in the shower or at the sink. No soap on non-wash days.
  2. Towel dry. Pat until it's damp, not dripping. Scrubbing frizzes the hair.
  3. Oil. 3 to 5 drops for a short beard, 5 to 8 for medium, about 10 for long. Warm it between your palms, push your fingertips down to the skin, work it in there, then pull what's left out through the ends.
  4. Comb. Go with the direction of growth. The comb spreads the oil and finds the spots your fingers missed.
  5. Balm, if you need it. A pea-sized amount on a medium or long beard to hold flyaways in place. Short beards can skip this.

If mornings are chaos, do it at night instead. The oil doesn't care what time it is.

The bottle in the middle of my table is The Warlock Beard Oil: dark tobacco, brown ale, citrus spark and cherry mist. A 1 oz bottle, $18.99. It's built on castor, coconut, sweet almond, argan and jojoba oils plus fragrance oil. It smells like a dark room with a lit fire, which is the point. For more on technique, read how to use beard oil.

Two or three times a week: wash and condition

Most men go wrong here. They wash the beard every day with regular shampoo, or they never wash it at all and trust the oil to cover it up. Both fail. Scalp shampoo can be harsh on facial skin, and oil on a dirty beard just sits on the dirt.

Two or three washes a week is the middle path. Wet the beard fully, work in a small amount of beard wash down to the skin, rinse, then follow with conditioner and rinse again. Sweaty job, daily gym, or you work around grease and smoke? Wash more often. Desk job and dry skin? Stay closer to two.

On my table that's The Warlock Beard Wash. 8 oz, $21.99, sulfate-free, made with aloe and five oils, same scent as the oil so the two don't argue. Pair it with a rinse-out conditioner from our beard conditioner collection.

Weekly: hold the line

A beard without edges looks abandoned, even when it's clean. Once a week, take ten minutes in front of a mirror with good light.

  • Neckline. About two finger-widths above your Adam's apple. Trim everything below it. Most men set it too high, which makes the jaw look smaller.
  • Cheek line. Take the strays only. Don't carve a new line every week or it creeps lower each time.
  • Mustache. Keep hair off your lip so it doesn't catch food or coffee.
  • Your comb. Wash it with warm soapy water. Old oil and skin build up in the teeth.

This is also when a growing beard starts asking for balm. Once it reaches an inch or so, it begins to have opinions about which way to point. The Warlock Beard Balm is a 2 oz tin, $23.99, same scent as the oil. Warm a pea-sized amount in your palms, smooth it over the top after the oil, and shape with the comb. It gives light hold. It won't freeze a beard in place.

Monthly: the reckoning

Once a month, step back and judge the whole shape, not just the edges.

  • Trim the overall shape, or see a barber every 4 to 6 weeks if you're growing it out and don't trust your hands yet.
  • Take a photo in the same light each month. It shows what a daily mirror hides.
  • Check your skin under the beard. Flaking, redness or itch that hangs around means something in the routine needs to change.
  • Sniff your bottles. Oil that smells sour or like old crayons has gone stale. Toss it.

Your beard grooming routine by length

The order stays the same. The doses and the extras change as the beard grows.

Length Daily Wash Extra
Stubble (under 1/4 inch) 2 or 3 drops of oil, rubbed into the skin 2 times a week Trim with a guard weekly to keep it even
Short (1/4 to 1 inch) 3 to 5 drops, comb 2 to 3 times a week Weekly neckline and cheek check
Medium (1 to 3 inches) 5 to 8 drops, comb, a little balm 2 to 3 times a week Shape trim every 4 to 6 weeks
Long (over 3 inches) About 10 drops, comb or brush, balm 2 to 3 times a week, conditioner every time Trim the ends every 6 to 8 weeks to keep them tidy

Long beards need the most control. Comb from the bottom up in short strokes so you work knots out instead of dragging them down. Short beards get overoiled. Shiny face an hour later? Cut a drop or two.

Adjusting for the season

Cold months

Dry indoor heat and cold wind pull water out of your skin. Keep the same plan, but add a smaller second dose of oil before bed, wash with lukewarm water instead of hot, and don't add extra wash days. If your beard still feels like straw, a beard butter at night is a heavier option. There's more in our guide to winter beard care.

Hot months

Sweat, sunscreen and pool water change the math the other way. Rinse your beard after swimming, and add a wash day if you sweat a lot. Use the low end of the oil range. Balm can feel heavy in real heat, so save it for days you need the shape.

If your skin is sensitive

Strip the routine down. Fewer products, fewer suspects when something flares.

  • Start with oil and water only for a week or two, then add wash, then balm.
  • Patch test anything new: one drop on your jaw, wait a day, stop if it turns red or itchy. Sweet almond and argan oils come from tree nuts, so check with your doctor first if you have a nut allergy.
  • If fragrance seems to be the trouble, switch to an unscented oil like The Barkeep, which has no added fragrance. My tobacco and cherry can wait.
  • Keep the water lukewarm and pat dry.

A routine can't treat a skin condition. If a rash or heavy flaking lasts more than a couple of weeks, see a dermatologist.

FAQ

What is the right order for a beard care routine?

Wash, condition, towel dry, oil, comb, then balm if you use it. Oil goes onto the skin while the beard is still damp, and balm goes over the top to hold the shape.

How often should I wash my beard?

Two or three times a week suits most beards. On the other days, a warm water rinse is enough. If you sweat hard at work or the gym, wash more often and don't skip conditioner.

How long should a daily beard routine take?

Two to five minutes. Oil and a comb take about two. A long beard with balm takes closer to five.

Do I need beard balm every day?

No. Balm is for control and a little hold. Short beards can skip it, while long or wiry beards usually want a small amount most mornings.

Should I change my routine in winter?

A little. Dry indoor heat pulls moisture from your skin, so add a smaller second dose of oil at night and wash with lukewarm water instead of hot.

One last thing

It's past midnight now. The candles are stubs. Wash, oil, balm, comb, in that order, the same as last night and the same as tomorrow. Power doesn't come from a rare ingredient or a secret word. It comes from doing the ordinary thing every day until it looks like magic to everyone else.

Your beard, your story.
