Beard Oil for Dry Skin: Fixing the Flakes Under Your Beard

The Wizard

The first cold snap of the year blew Dr. Wolf through my shop door just after closing. He stood there in his long black coat, brushing what I took for snow off the lapels. It wasn't snow. "I patch up half of Boron every winter," he growled, scratching at his jaw, "and I can't fix my own chin."

Flakes on a dark coat are the most common winter beard complaint I hear. Beard oil for dry skin works when it's treating the skin, not just the hair. Wash with a gentle beard wash two or three times a week, rinse with lukewarm water, work a few drops of oil into damp skin right after you towel off, and add beard butter at night once the furnace kicks on. Give that two weeks of doing it every day before you judge it. If redness or greasy, yellowish flakes stick around after that, it may not be dry skin at all, and we'll get to that below.

Here's What You Need to Know
  • The skin under a beard dries out from harsh soap, hot showers, dry winter air and the beard itself pulling oil away from your face.
  • Beard oil works best as part of a routine: a gentle beard wash 2 to 3 times a week, lukewarm water, oil on damp skin, and beard butter at night when it's cold.
  • Start with 3 to 5 drops on a short beard and work it into the skin first. More oil doesn't mean less flaking.
  • Touchy with fragrance? The Barkeep has none added. Want a cold-weather scent? Dr. Wolf.
  • Redness that won't fade or greasy, yellowish flakes are a reason to see a dermatologist, not to buy another bottle.

Why the skin under your beard dries out

Your skin makes its own oil, called sebum. On a bare face it mostly stays where it's needed. Under a beard, four things work against it.

  • Harsh soap. Bar soap, body wash and regular shampoo are built to cut grease off your whole body or your scalp. Used on your face every morning, they strip away what little oil the skin under your beard had left.
  • Hot showers. Hot water feels great in January, and it pulls oil off your skin almost as well as soap does.
  • Winter heat. Cold air holds very little moisture, and your furnace dries the indoor air even more.
  • The beard itself. Hair pulls oil up and away from the skin, the way a candle wick pulls up wax. The longer the beard, the more hair there is to share that oil with, so the skin at the roots ends up with less. That's why a new beard often starts itching around week two, and why long beards can flake even in July.

How beard oil for dry skin actually helps

Beard oil doesn't pour water back into your skin. What it does is lay down a thin layer of oil where your beard has been stealing it. That helps the skin hang on to the moisture it already has, and it keeps the hair from feeling like straw.

Timing matters. Oil on damp skin right after a shower seals some of that water in. Oil on dry skin at 3 p.m. mostly just sits there.

Our beard oils like Dr. Wolf and The Barkeep use the same five carrier oils: castor, coconut, sweet almond, argan and jojoba. Jojoba does a lot of the skin-side work, because it behaves a lot like the oil your skin makes on its own (our jojoba oil guide covers why). Castor and sweet almond add weight, so it lasts on a longer beard.

The winter-proof routine for dry skin under a beard

None of this is fancy. The trick is doing all of it, every day, for a couple of weeks.

  1. Wash 2 to 3 times a week, not every day. Use a wash made for facial hair, like the ones in our beard wash collection, instead of whatever's sitting in the shower. On the days in between, just rinse with water.
  2. Turn the water down. Rinse your beard with lukewarm water and save the hot water for your back.
  3. Pat, don't rub. Press a towel into your beard until it's damp, not dripping. Scrubbing roughs up skin that's already irritated.
  4. Oil within a few minutes. Warm the drops between your palms, push your fingertips through to the skin and work it in there first. Then pull what's left out through the hair and finish with a comb.
  5. Butter at night when it's cold. Before bed, rub a fingertip of beard butter between your hands and press it into the skin and hair. Butter is heavier than oil, so it's still doing its job at 2 a.m. when the furnace is running. New to it? Here's what beard butter is.

How much beard oil to use

When skin is dry, the instinct is to pour on more. Don't. Too much oil just sits on top and can clog things up along your jawline. Start here:

Beard length Oil after your shower At night in winter
Stubble to 1/4 inch 2 to 3 drops 1 or 2 more drops of oil
Short (1/4 to 1 inch) 3 to 5 drops A small fingertip of beard butter
Medium (1 to 3 inches) 5 to 8 drops A fingertip of butter worked down to the skin
Long (3 inches and up) 8 to 10 drops Two fingertips of butter, skin first, then the ends

Adjust from there. If the itch is back by lunch, add a drop or two. If your beard still looks wet two hours later, or your pillowcase has a shine to it, take two drops away.

What to avoid when your beard skin is dry

  • Bar soap and body wash on your face. Great for your arms. Rough on the skin under your beard, especially every day.
  • Scratching and picking. Pulling off a flake usually takes the healthy skin underneath with it, and then you've got a sore spot.
  • Hard scrubbing with a stiff brush. A comb or brush is great for spreading oil. Let it glide over the skin instead of sanding it.
  • Stacking scents. Scented wash, scented oil, cologne and an alcohol-heavy aftershave on the same patch of skin is a lot. If your skin is touchy, cut the fragrance first.

Dr. Wolf or The Barkeep: picking a beard oil for dry skin

Since both use the same base oils, the best beard oil for dry skin comes down to two questions. Does your skin get along with fragrance? And which smell would you be happy to wear twice a day all winter?

Dr. Wolf beard oil is fresh blueberries, warm tobacco and aged mahogany, made with an IFRA-compliant fragrance oil in a 1 oz bottle for $18.99. It smells like a study with a fire going, which is exactly what you want in December. If you like it, the Dr. Wolf collection carries the same scent into butter, and the Dr. Wolf Oil & Butter Kit ($42.99) pairs the 1 oz oil with a 4 oz tub of butter made from cocoa, shea, mango, kokum and illipe butters with beeswax. That's the morning-and-night routine above in one box.

The Barkeep beard oil is the same five oils with no added fragrance, also 1 oz for $18.99. Reach for it if scented products have bothered your skin before, if you wear a cologne you love, or if you can't tell what's irritating you. Going unscented for two weeks is a simple way to find out whether fragrance is part of the problem.

Whichever you choose, try a drop on your jaw and wait a day before going all in, and stop using anything that makes your skin angrier. Sweet almond oil comes from a tree nut, so check with your doctor first if you have a nut allergy. The rest of our scents live in the full beard oil collection.

When it's not just dry skin

Plain dry skin under a beard usually looks like small, dry, white flakes and feels tight, and it calms down within a couple of weeks of the routine above. If it doesn't, or it looks different from that, stop buying products and book a dermatologist.

What you notice Sounds like dry skin Worth a dermatologist visit
The flakes Small, white, dry, brush off easily Greasy, yellowish or stuck to the skin
The skin Tight, maybe a little pink after scratching Red patches that stay red
Timing Worse in winter or after hot showers, better with the routine No better after 2 to 3 weeks of good care, or getting worse
Where Under the beard Also on your eyebrows, the sides of your nose, your scalp or behind your ears

One common culprit with that second column is seborrheic dermatitis, a skin condition that needs a doctor's look rather than more moisture. Beard oil isn't a treatment for it.

FAQ

Is beard oil good for dry skin under a beard?

Yes, as long as it reaches the skin. Beard oil puts back some of the oil your beard pulls away from your face and helps your skin hold on to moisture, especially when you apply it to damp skin after a shower. Pair it with a gentle wash and lukewarm water and it does a lot more than it can on its own.

What's the best beard oil for dry skin?

Look for a blend of skin-friendly carrier oils like jojoba, argan and sweet almond, and pick the scent level your skin is happy with. If fragrance bothers you, go unscented, like The Barkeep. If it doesn't, a scented oil such as Dr. Wolf uses the same base oils and works the same way.

Should I use beard oil or beard butter for dry skin?

Use both if your skin is really dry. Oil goes on after your shower because it sinks in fast and reaches the skin, and butter goes on at night because it's heavier and stays put longer. In mild weather, oil alone is usually enough.

How often should I wash my beard if the skin is dry?

Two to three times a week with a beard wash is plenty for most guys. On the other days, rinse with lukewarm water and skip the soap. Washing every day with bar soap or body wash is one of the most common reasons beard skin gets flaky.

Why is my beard still flaky even though I use beard oil?

Usually it's the rest of the routine: hot showers, daily soap or oil that only touches the hair and never reaches the skin. Fix those and give it two weeks. If the flakes are greasy or yellowish, or the skin stays red, see a dermatologist, because that may not be dry skin.

One last thing

Dr. Wolf left that night with a bottle of his own oil, a tin of butter and strict orders to stop scalding his face in the bath. He came back two weeks later in the same black coat. Not a flake on it. He didn't say thank you, exactly. He just grunted, tapped his jaw and said, "Lukewarm. Who knew."
