Captain Crimson coconut beard oil bottle, a blended alternative to using raw coconut oil for beard care

Coconut Oil for Your Beard: Benefits, Downsides and How to Use It

Captain Crimson

Ship's log, three bells. The glass was dropping fast and a gray wall was building off the port bow. Down in the galley, Cook was cracking coconuts with the back of a cleaver, and young Pike was scooping the white fat out of a jar and slapping it into his beard like he was greasing a winch. "Keeps the salt out, Captain," he said. By the time the storm hit, half of it had gone solid in the cold and the other half was sliding down his neck.

So here's the short answer, all hands. Coconut oil for beard care works: it softens coarse hair, adds shine and helps the skin underneath feel less tight. The catch is that raw coconut oil is heavy, turns solid below about 76°F (24°C), and can clog pores on skin that breaks out easily. Used alone, it's best as an occasional deep treatment on the hair. For daily use, coconut oil works better as one oil in a blend with lighter carriers, which is how our beard oils are made.

Here's What You Need to Know
  • Coconut oil softens beard hair and gives it shine. It's a good conditioner, especially for coarse or wiry beards.
  • Virgin coconut oil goes solid below about 76°F (24°C) and smells like coconut. Fractionated coconut oil stays liquid and has almost no smell.
  • It's heavy and can clog pores. If you get bumps along your jaw, keep pure coconut oil off your skin.
  • For everyday care, a blended beard oil with coconut plus lighter oils like jojoba and argan is easier to live with than a jar from the kitchen.

Is coconut oil good for your beard?

Mostly yes, with a few rocks to steer around. Coconut oil is rich in fatty acids (lauric acid is the big one), and studies on head hair suggest it soaks into the hair shaft better than many plant oils, which sit more on the surface. In plain terms: a beard that feels like a scrub brush will feel softer after a coconut oil treatment, and it'll comb through with less snagging.

It also smells good, if you like coconut. On my ship that's half the reason the crew uses it. The trouble starts when you treat it like a daily leave-in and slather it on the skin. That's where the downsides show up.

Virgin, refined or fractionated: know your cargo

"Coconut oil" on a label can mean a few different things. Here's how they stack up.

Type At room temperature Smell Best use on a beard
Virgin (unrefined) Solid below about 76°F, liquid above Strong coconut Weekly deep treatment on the hair
Refined Same as virgin Mild to none Same as virgin, if you don't want the smell
Fractionated Always liquid Almost none Lighter, easier to spread; common in blends and serums

Fractionated coconut oil has had most of the heavier fats removed, so it won't turn into a waxy slab in a cold cabin. It also feels less greasy. Virgin coconut oil keeps more of the original fats and that tropical smell, which is why it's the one people grab from the pantry.

The benefits of coconut oil for beard hair

  • Softening. This is the main reason to use it. Coarse, curly and wiry beards feel noticeably smoother after a treatment.
  • Shine. A thin coat gives a dull beard some gloss. Too much and it just looks wet.
  • Less snagging. Softer hair slides past a comb instead of fighting it, so you're tugging and snapping fewer hairs.
  • Skin comfort. A little oil helps the skin under the beard feel less tight and dry, especially in wind and sun.
  • Cheap and simple. One ingredient, easy to find. If you just want to try something tonight, it's probably in your kitchen.

What it won't do: grow a beard. No oil creates new hair or fills patches. It makes the beard you have feel and look better, and that's a fine job on its own.

The downsides (and they're real)

It's heavy

Coconut oil is thick. On a short beard or stubble, even a small scoop can leave you looking like you just ate fried chicken with your face. Longer beards handle it better because there's more hair to soak it up.

It can clog pores

Coconut oil is rated high on most comedogenic charts you'll find online, meaning it's more likely than many oils to clog pores. Under a beard, where skin is already warm and covered, that can mean small bumps along the jaw and cheeks. If your skin breaks out easily, keep pure coconut oil on the hair and away from the skin, or skip it. If bumps or a rash stick around for weeks, see a dermatologist.

It turns solid in the cold

Below about 76°F it firms up. That's no problem in a warm bathroom, but on a cold morning it can leave a waxy, white film in a dark beard. Pike learned that one the hard way.

The smell sticks around

Virgin coconut oil smells like coconut, and it can clash with a cologne or a scented wash. If you want coconut, fine. If you don't, use refined or fractionated.

Raw coconut oil vs a blended beard oil

This is the real choice behind most searches for coconut oil for beard care. A jar of coconut oil does one thing well: softening. A blended beard oil mixes coconut with other carriers that cover its weak spots. Our beard oils use five: castor, coconut, sweet almond, argan and jojoba oils, with an IFRA-compliant fragrance oil in the scented blends. Jojoba and argan are lighter and spread easily, castor adds a bit of thickness and sheen, and coconut brings its softening.

Raw coconut oil Blended beard oil
Texture Heavy, solid when cool Liquid, lighter feel
Daily use Often too greasy Built for it
Skin under the beard Risky if acne-prone Coconut is one part of the mix, not all of it
Dosing Scoop and guess Dropper, easy to measure
Scent Coconut or nothing Your choice of scent, or unscented

How to use coconut oil on your beard: orders of the day

If you want to try pure coconut oil, use it as a weekly treatment, not a daily one.

  1. Start clean. Wash your beard and towel it dry.
  2. Melt a small amount. About half a teaspoon for a medium beard. Rub it between your palms until it's liquid.
  3. Work it into the hair. Go from the middle of the beard out to the ends. If you're prone to breakouts, keep it off the skin.
  4. Let it sit. Give it 20 to 30 minutes while you do something else.
  5. Wash it out. Rinse with a beard wash and lukewarm water so it doesn't leave a greasy film.
  6. Watch your skin. If new bumps show up along your jaw over the next few days, coconut isn't your friend in pure form.

For every other day, use a few drops of a blended oil. Three to five drops for a short beard, five to eight for medium, around ten for long. Our guide on how to use beard oil walks through the full routine.

My picks if you like coconut

If you love the smell of coconut but not the grease, these are the bottles I'd put in your sea chest. Browse the whole beard oil collection if you want to compare scents.

  • Captain Crimson Beard Oil. 1 oz, $18.99. Creamy Coconut, Sea Salt and Fresh Vanilla. My own blend: coconut you can smell, without a spoonful of solid fat in your beard.
  • Captain Crimson Beard Balm. 2 oz tin, $23.99. Same scent with Warm Amber added. Use a beard balm after the oil when you need a little hold for flyaways in the wind.
  • Rum Runner Beard Oil. 1 oz, $18.99. Bay Rum Spices, Tahitian Lime and Fresh Coconut. More island bar than galley, and a fine pick if you want coconut with some spice.

One note for the crew: our oils and balms contain sweet almond and argan oils, which come from tree nuts. If you have a nut allergy, check with your doctor first, and patch test anything new on your jaw for a day.

FAQ

Can I use coconut oil instead of beard oil?

You can, but it's heavier and turns solid when it's cool, so it can feel greasy as a daily product. Most people do better using it as a weekly treatment and a blended beard oil the rest of the time.

Does coconut oil clog pores under a beard?

It can. Coconut oil ranks high on most comedogenic charts, so acne-prone skin may get bumps along the jaw. Keep it on the hair rather than the skin, or choose a lighter blend.

Does coconut oil help a beard grow?

No. It softens and conditions the hair you already have, but no oil creates new hair or fills patches.

Should I use virgin or fractionated coconut oil on my beard?

Virgin coconut oil is richer and smells like coconut, so it suits an occasional deep treatment. Fractionated stays liquid and feels lighter, which makes it easier for frequent use.

How often should I put coconut oil on my beard?

Pure coconut oil works best about once a week as a leave-in treatment you wash out after 20 to 30 minutes. A blended beard oil with coconut in it can go on daily.

One last thing

When the storm cleared, Pike came up on deck with a beard full of white wax and a red rash on his chin. I handed him a bottle of my oil and told him to save the coconuts for Cook's curry. He's been on the dropper ever since, and his beard still smells like the tropics. Coconut has a place on this ship. It just isn't by the scoop.
