Why Does My Beard Smell? (And How to Fix It Fast)

The Baker

The first tray of cinnamon rolls had just come out of the oven when The Warlock leaned over my counter, breathed in deep and frowned. "Baker," he said, "something in here has gone off." I checked the cream, the butter and the bin out back. Then he scratched his chin, and the mystery solved itself. It wasn't my kitchen. It was his beard.

So, why does my beard smell? Usually for boring, fixable reasons. A beard is a thick mat of hair sitting right under your nose, and it catches everything: food, sweat, smoke, skin oil and the water you didn't dry out of it. Bacteria feed on that mix and make the funk. Wash it properly, rinse it all the way, dry it all the way and give it a little good-smelling oil, and most beards smell fine again within a day or two. If the smell hangs on and your skin is red, flaky or sore, that's a doctor's question, and I'll get to it.

Here's What You Need to Know
  • Most beard smell comes from leftovers: food, sweat, smoke and skin oil that bacteria break down. It's a cleaning problem, not a character flaw.
  • The two sneakiest causes are soap you didn't rinse out and a beard that stays damp for hours. A musty, wet-dog smell usually means one of those.
  • Fix it in order: wash with a beard wash, rinse twice as long as you think, dry fully, swap your towel, then add a few drops of beard oil.
  • A good-smelling beard is a daily habit: a quick rinse after meals, oil in the morning, a proper wash a few times a week.
  • If the smell sticks around after a week of clean habits, especially with a rash, crusting or soreness, see a doctor or dermatologist.

The recipe for a smelly beard

Every bad smell has a recipe. Most smelly beards are using two or three of these ingredients at once.

1. Food (the obvious one)

Crumbs, sauce, coffee, the drip of milk off the cereal spoon. A mustache sits right over your mouth and a beard sits right under it, so they catch more of lunch than you do. Dairy, garlic and fried food are the worst offenders. I wear powdered sugar for a living, so trust me.

2. Sweat

The skin under your beard sweats like the rest of your face, but the hair holds that sweat against your skin instead of letting it dry. Sweat barely smells on its own. Bacteria breaking it down make the sour note.

3. Smoke and the air around you

Beard hair grabs smells the way a sweater does. Cigars, campfires, a grill, a fryer. You stop noticing it in ten minutes. Everyone you hug notices right away.

4. Not rinsing

This one surprises people. You wash, so how can it smell? Because a thick beard holds onto lather. Leftover soap mixes with skin oil into a waxy film that goes stale. If your beard feels a little tacky or "coated" after a shower, you didn't rinse enough.

5. A beard that stays damp

Wet hair that sits wet smells like wet hair. A dense beard can stay damp underneath for an hour or more after a quick towel pat, and that warm, damp layer is where the musty, wet-dog smell comes from.

6. Oily skin

Your skin makes its own oil, called sebum. Some faces make a lot of it. Left too long between washes, it builds up in the beard and starts to smell a bit like an old pillow.

7. Mildew in your towels (and your comb)

You can do everything right and then dry your face on a towel that's been hanging damp in a steamy bathroom for a week. That towel can smell musty, and it hands that smell straight back to you. Same goes for a beard brush or comb that's never been cleaned.

What does the smell tell you?

I can tell a burnt crust from an underbaked one by smell alone. Your nose can do the same for your beard.

What you smell Most likely cause First fix
Sour, like old milk or yesterday's lunch Food caught in the hair Rinse and comb after meals; wash tonight
Musty, wet dog, damp basement Beard not drying, or a mildewy towel Dry fully; use a fresh towel
Stale, waxy, a bit like an old pillow Leftover soap, oil buildup, too much product Wash and rinse longer; cut your oil drops
Sharp and sour after the gym Sweat plus bacteria Rinse right after a workout and dry it
Smoky, ashy, greasy kitchen Smoke or cooking air Wash, then a scented oil
Bad smell that won't quit, with redness or crusting Possibly a skin problem See a doctor or dermatologist

How to fix a smelly beard, in order

Order matters. Don't frost a cake that isn't baked: oil on a dirty beard just gives you a dirty beard that smells like doughnuts.

  1. Wash it with a beard wash. Wet the beard well, work a small amount of beard wash down to the skin with your fingertips and give it a good minute of scrubbing. Here's why beard shampoo and regular shampoo aren't the same.
  2. Rinse twice as long as you think. Let the water run through for a full 30 seconds or more, squeezing the beard as you go. When it stops feeling slippery, rinse a little more.
  3. Dry it all the way. Press and squeeze with a towel instead of rubbing. If your beard is thick or long, finish with a hair dryer on low or cool, held a few inches away, until the hair near your skin is dry.
  4. Swap the towel. Use a clean, fully dry towel for your face and beard. Wash towels often and hang them spread out to dry.
  5. Clean your tools. Wash your comb or brush in warm soapy water every week or two and let it air dry.
  6. Oil it lightly. Once it's clean and dry, add a few drops of beard oil, starting at the skin. Now your beard smells like something you picked on purpose.

If your beard feels dry or rough after washing, a rinse-out conditioner helps. Our guide on whether you need beard conditioner covers who should bother.

How to make your beard smell good every day

Here's my house recipe. About five minutes a day.

Ingredients

  • A beard wash (2 to 4 washes a week for most beards; more if you sweat a lot or work around food or smoke)
  • A beard oil you actually like smelling
  • A clean towel and a comb

Method

  1. Morning: On wash days, wash, rinse and dry as above. On other days, rinse with plain warm water and dry.
  2. Oil: 3 to 5 drops for a short beard, 5 to 8 for a medium one, around 10 for a long beard. Warm it in your palms, work it into the skin, pull it through the ends, then comb.
  3. After meals: Quick splash of water, pat dry, run a comb through.
  4. After the gym or a smoky night: Rinse and dry when you get home rather than waiting for the morning.
  5. Before bed: Make sure the beard is dry before your face hits the pillow.

Don't overdo the oil. Extra drops make a beard greasy, and greasy holds smells.

My picks for a beard that smells like a bakery

I'm biased. Here's what I'd put on the counter for you.

  • The Baker Beard Oil. 1 oz bottle, $18.99. Fresh doughnuts, warm vanilla sugar and a hint of cinnamon spice. Our beard oils like this one are built on five carrier oils (castor, coconut, sweet almond, argan and jojoba) plus fragrance. A few drops once your beard is clean and dry.
  • The Baker Beard Wash. 8 oz, $21.99. Sulfate-free, with aloe and five oils, in the same scent as the oil so they don't argue. This is the step that actually gets the smell out.
  • The Barkeep Beard Oil. 1 oz, $18.99, no added fragrance. For fragrance-sensitive skin, or if your cologne does the talking.

Not a doughnut man? Fair. The whole beard oil collection runs from pine forests to bay rum, and there's a guide to picking your signature scent if you're stuck.

When a smelly beard needs a doctor

Most beard smell is about washing, rinsing and drying. But if you've cleaned up your routine for a week or more and the smell is still there, and especially if it comes with a rash, redness, greasy yellow flakes, crusting, bumps, pain or oozing, see a doctor or dermatologist. Skin conditions and infections under a beard can smell, and no oil or wash is the right fix for those.

Plain flakes with no smell are a different issue. Our guide to beard dandruff walks through that one.

FAQ

Why does my beard smell even after I wash it?

Usually because soap is left in it, it isn't drying all the way, or your towel is musty. Rinse for longer, dry down to the skin and use a clean, dry towel. If the smell still won't go, especially with a rash, see a doctor.

Why does my beard smell like a wet dog?

That musty smell nearly always means moisture. The hair close to your skin stayed damp for too long, or you dried it on a towel that never fully dries. Dry the beard completely after every wash and swap towels often.

How often should I wash my beard so it doesn't smell?

For most beards, a proper beard wash 2 to 4 times a week, with a plain water rinse on the other days, is plenty. Wash more often if you sweat a lot or spend your day around food or smoke.

Does beard oil make your beard smell good?

A scented beard oil adds a pleasant smell, and it keeps the skin underneath from getting dry and flaky. It works best on a clean, dry beard. Oil on a dirty beard just mixes with whatever smell is already there.

Can I spray cologne on my beard to cover the smell?

It's better not to. Most colognes are alcohol-based and can dry out beard hair, and they only cover the smell for a while. Clean the beard first, then spray cologne on your neck or chest.

One last thing

The Warlock came back the following Saturday. Same counter, same cinnamon rolls, same deep breath. This time the only thing in the room that smelled like warm sugar and cinnamon was the tray and, I'm proud to say, his chin. He'd started rinsing properly and quit drying his face on his gym towel. He bought two rolls and said nothing about my kitchen. From him, that's high praise.
