Once upon a time, in a far-off forest, there lived a troll named Grumps. Grumps was a grumpy old troll who lived a lonely life under a bridge. He spent his days sulking and grumbling to himself, never finding joy in anything.

One day, as he was sitting on the edge of the stream, he noticed a sweet scent in the air. He followed the scent and discovered a patch of wildflowers. The fragrance was coming from a sandalwood pipe that lay amidst the flowers. Grumps picked up the pipe and tentatively sniffed it. To his surprise, the aroma was not only pleasing but also brought back memories of his youth.

Feeling curious, Grumps filled the pipe with tobacco and lit it. The smoke was thick and fragrant, and it carried him to a place where the world was brighter and more refreshing. He found himself walking through a meadow surrounded by the fresh scents of oak moss and the sounds of a gentle stream.

I was initially drawn to Fable Beard Co. due to their large selection of fragrances, including seasonal, limited edition, and frequent new scents being added to the line-up. This proved to be a double-edged sword, however, given so many choices! I eventually settled on the Troll Butter set which includes the beard wash, beard conditioner, beard oil, and beard butter all in The Troll scent. My package arrived just a few days after completing my order, and it turned out that I had chosen well! I have tried several competitors' products in the past, fewer than ten, so there is still a lot out there that I have not experienced. That being said, The Troll is my favorite scent of any beard product I've used to date, and the benefits are at least as good and probably better than even the best of the other brands with which I have direct experience.

In-depth discussion of The Troll scent:

Let me start off by saying that I have always been interested in fragrances and have amassed a sizable collection of designer fragrances. I also seem to have the rare gift of being able to select new fragrances for others given some knowledge of other scents they are known to like. I find the Troll Set to be ideal, particularly for someone who wants a light, fresh, clean scent that is unlikely to clash with other colognes, eau de toilettes, or parfums you may wish to wear. I would peg the scent family to be largely aquatic in nature. Think classic fragrances like Cool Water by Davidoff or Nautica. Note, I am NOT saying that The Troll smells exactly like either of these. I'm saying that it is in the same scent family. The fragrance is bold enough to give a notable, refreshing shower experience, and a the scent lingers close to the point of application. If someone hugs you, that person will likely pick up The Troll scent, but I suspect they are more likely to assume you've recently showered as opposed to thinking they're smelling a dedicated cologne/eau de toilette/parfum. If wearing a designer fragrance with a similar scent profile along with The Troll, there may be some pleasant interaction of the scents very close the skin, but I'd expect The Troll to disappear farther out from the skin. While I have yet to try it with bolder evening/autumn scents, I suspect it would only clash as much as a typical fresh/clean scented shower soap and more likely would just be overwhelmed leaving the primary fragrance to shine on its own.

Limited Comparison:

I received some other items in my order which I will review elsewhere, but I will compare them to The Troll here in the hopes someone finds it helpful when making their own scent selections.

The Scribe Co-Wash:

The Scribe Co-Wash, to my understanding, is a beard conditioner with a small amount of added detergent. It is sort of an in-between option for those who want to try not washing their beard every shower but are reluctant to stop at a simple water rinse. I am still evaluating my preference when it comes to washing frequency, but I find the Co-Wash to work as expected as a kind of in-between product that gets cleaner than water alone but avoids stripping the hair as much as a more regular shampooing might.

The scent of The Scribe is quite strong in the shower. It smells very much like a boutique coffee shop that also sells chocolates or has recently made some sort of mocha concoction. Personally, I would rather not go around smelling like coffee and chocolate, but I do very much enjoy the fragrance during my shower. Thankfully, and rather to my surprise, The Scribe does not linger much at all post shower. I have not yet paired it with any lighter designer fragrances, as I limit its use to nighttime around the house. I usually follow it with The Strongman beard oil, which is incredibly strong smelling. I will discuss it more later, but I want to mention it here as it is possible that The Scribe lingers more than I realize and it is just being overwhelmed by The Strongman.

The Grower Beard Butter:

The Grower scent is very light and fresh with a dominant note of crisp green apple. It is a very good apple scent, almost identical to a real, fresh, green apple, with no synthetic notes to it at all that I pick up on. I suspect it would blend well with most light fragrances, though it does linger a fair bit on the skin. I'd expect it to add a crisp green apple note to any other fragrances you might be wearing. Generally, I would expect it to combine neutrally at worst with other fragrances, but I can imagine it clashing with some spicy, warm, musky, or otherwise more evening/autumn/winter scents. I don't think the clashes would often be particularly ruinous, but I can imagine some fragrances (like Chanel Bleu) where the crisp apple note might be unwelcome. However, I can also imagine the scent might improve some fragrances by adding a green apple top note which might blend quite nicely in certain cases. I'd feel pretty safe ordering this ...
